With electricity tariffs constantly fluctuating, opening your monthly power bill can often feel like a shock. Electricity is billed in Units, which is technically known as a Kilowatt-Hour (kWh). One Unit of electricity is consumed when you run a 1,000-watt appliance for exactly one hour.

  • A 100-watt incandescent bulb running for 10 hours = 1 Unit.
  • A 2,000-watt geyser running for 30 minutes = 1 Unit.
  • A 746-watt (1 HP) water pump running for 1.3 hours = 1 Unit.

Strategies to Slash Your Monthly Cost

Once you have built your list in the tool above, look at the items contributing the most to your total kWh. Here is how you can target them:

1. Upgrade to BLDC Fans

Traditional ceiling fans consume about 75 to 80 watts. Because they often run 12 to 24 hours a day, they are hidden energy drains. Modern BLDC (Brushless Direct Current) fans consume only 28 to 35 watts while delivering the same airflow. Replacing four traditional fans with BLDC fans can save you over 1,000 units a year.

2. Invest in Inverter ACs

A standard 1.5 Ton AC consumes roughly 1,500 watts continuously while the compressor is on. An Inverter AC dynamically adjusts its compressor speed based on the room temperature, dropping its consumption to as low as 400 watts once the room is cooled. If you use an AC for more than 4 hours a day, the upgrade pays for itself rapidly.

3. Beware of Vampire Loads

Appliances like televisions, microwaves, and set-top boxes consume "standby power" even when turned off but left plugged in. Unplugging these devices or putting them on a switched power strip can trim 2% to 5% off your final bill.
