Whether you are auditing your personal assets, preparing for a wedding, or evaluating an investment, calculating the true value of gold jewelry is rarely straightforward. When you walk into a jewelry showroom or attempt to value your own collection, the final number is never just the "weight multiplied by the daily gold rate."

To accurately value your gold, you must understand the "Jeweler's Math." This involves breaking down the asset into three distinct categories: the intrinsic value of the pure gold, the premium paid for craftsmanship (making charges), and mandatory government taxes.

Demystifying the Jeweler's Math

The true cost (or resale value) of a piece of gold jewelry is calculated using this fundamental formula:

Total Value = (Daily Gold Rate per Gram × Purity Factor × Weight) + Making Charges + GST (3%)

1. Understanding Purity (Karatage)

The daily market rate you see in the news is almost always for 24 Karat (24K) gold, which is 99.9% pure. However, 24K gold is too soft to be molded into durable jewelry. It is usually alloyed with copper, silver, or zinc to give it strength.

  • 22K Gold (916 Gold): The standard for Indian jewelry. It contains 91.6% pure gold. To find its base value, you multiply the 24K rate by 0.916.
  • 18K Gold: Contains 75.0% pure gold. Often used for stone-studded jewelry and diamond rings because the harder alloy holds gems more securely.

2. Making Charges & Wastage

Making charges represent the labor and craftsmanship required to design the piece. This can be charged as a flat rate per gram or as a percentage of the gold's value (typically ranging from 8% to 25% depending on the intricacy of the design). Note: When you resell jewelry to melt it down, you lose 100% of the making charges.

The Gold Asset Calculator

Use the interactive tool below to build an itemized list of your jewelry. Set today's 24K market rate, adjust the purity slider for each item, and input the weight. The tool will automatically separate the intrinsic gold value from the making charges and calculate the final taxes.

Asset Tracking & Export

If you are using this tool for personal accounting or insurance valuation, you can click the "Download CSV" button at the bottom of the calculator to export your itemized list directly to Excel or Google Sheets.
