Freshwater is one of Earth's most valuable natural resources. It supports drinking water supplies, agriculture, industry, ecosystems, hydropower, and food production.

But freshwater is not distributed equally around the world. Some countries have enormous renewable freshwater resources, while others face severe water scarcity despite having large populations or significant economic resources.

💧 What Does “Freshwater Reserve” Mean?

When comparing countries, it is useful to look at renewable freshwater resources.

This generally refers to freshwater replenished naturally through:

  • 🏔️ Snow and glaciers

  • 🏞️ Rivers and lakes

  • 💧 Groundwater recharge

The figures are normally expressed in cubic kilometres (km³) per year.

It is important to remember that this is different from the amount of water physically stored in reservoirs, lakes, glaciers, or underground aquifers.

🇧🇷 Brazil: The Freshwater Giant

Brazil stands out dramatically in global freshwater resources.

Its enormous freshwater availability is strongly associated with the Amazon Basin, one of the world's largest river systems.

Brazil's water resources support:

  • Agriculture

  • Hydroelectric power

  • Inland transportation

  • Cities and industries

  • One of the world's largest rainforest systems

However, having abundant freshwater nationally does not mean every Brazilian region has unlimited access to clean water.

Russia has the world's second-largest renewable freshwater resources in many international datasets.

Its enormous territory contains extensive:

The United States has major river systems and large lakes, including the Great Lakes, which contain a substantial share of the world's surface freshwater.

Yet water availability varies dramatically across these countries. The western United States, for example, is considerably drier than regions around the Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest.

🇮🇳 India: Large Total Resources, High Pressure

India has a large absolute volume of renewable freshwater resources and ranks among the world's leading countries by total freshwater availability.

But there is an important catch:

Population changes the picture.

India has more than 1.4 billion people sharing its freshwater resources. Consequently, freshwater availability per person is much lower than in countries such as Canada, Russia or Brazil.

India also faces major challenges from:

A country's freshwater resources do not automatically mean that all of that water is available for human use.

Water can be:

  • Too far from population centres

  • Frozen

  • Seasonally unavailable

  • Contaminated

  • Difficult to extract

  • Environmentally important and therefore unsuitable for unrestricted extraction

Infrastructure also matters.

Agriculture is one of the world's largest users of freshwater.

Water is required for:

Countries with abundant renewable water resources can have major agricultural advantages, but only when the water is located where and when it is needed.

Irrigation can transform agricultural productivity, but excessive groundwater extraction can create a long-term problem.

More water today does not guarantee water tomorrow.

This explains why countries with enormous freshwater resources can still have water shortages, while smaller countries can successfully manage limited supplies.

🌊 Protecting Freshwater Is a Global Responsibility

Freshwater is renewable, but clean freshwater is not unlimited.

Pollution, over-extraction, deforestation, inefficient irrigation and climate change can reduce the amount of freshwater that is practically available to people and ecosystems.

Protecting rivers, lakes, wetlands and groundwater is therefore not simply an environmental issue.

It is also an issue of:

Food security • Public health • Economic development • Energy • National resilience

💧 Water may be renewable—but usable freshwater is a resource we cannot afford to waste.
