This is probably the most surprising part.

But our body doesn't use these gases in the same way.

Why Is Our Breath Visible on a Cold Day?

Have you ever breathed outside on a cold morning and seen a white cloud coming from your mouth?

That's mainly because of water.

The air coming from your lungs is warm and moist. When it meets cold outdoor air, some of the water vapor condenses into tiny liquid droplets.

Those tiny droplets scatter light, making your breath look like a small white cloud.

It isn't smoke.

It is mainly condensed water.

Why Doesn't Nitrogen Leave the Body?

Because your body doesn't normally absorb much of the nitrogen gas you inhale.

Your lungs are designed for efficient gas exchange, especially the movement of oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out of the blood.

Most nitrogen simply passes through.

This is why the amount of nitrogen in inhaled and exhaled air remains fairly similar.

For example, an environment containing a very high concentration of nitrogen but not enough oxygen can cause serious oxygen deprivation.

The danger isn't that nitrogen is acting like a conventional poison. The danger is that there isn't enough oxygen for the body.

Why Can't We Use Nitrogen Instead of Oxygen?

This comes down to chemistry.

Nitrogen gas, N₂, is very stable because its two nitrogen atoms are connected by a very strong chemical bond.

Our cells cannot simply take atmospheric nitrogen and use it instead of oxygen to produce energy.

Oxygen is much better suited to the chemical reactions involved in aerobic energy production.

That's why our bodies depend on oxygen even though nitrogen is much more abundant in the atmosphere.

But Our Body Still Needs Nitrogen

This can seem confusing.

We don't use atmospheric nitrogen gas for normal energy production, but our bodies absolutely need nitrogen.
